1) Prevent Frozen Pipes

Holiday vacation disaster at home can be prevented. Preventing pipes from freezing is essential before leaving for that planned holiday vacation. When pipes freeze they become susceptible to cracks and bursts due to the accumulation of pressure inside them. When pipes burst then water is released into the surrounding hence leading to floods in the house and the compound. The last thing one would want is for their holiday vacation to be cut short due to avoidable circumstances like preventing the pipes from freezing. Flooding in the house not only causes disruption of the holiday vacation but also the damage of property and economic loss due to huge expenditures to repair what was not insured.

 2) Set Thermostat and Lock All Windows

It is prudent to set your thermostat appropriately while on vacation; not to exceed 20 above or below the usual setting. In the winter the setting should be not less than 40 F to avoid freezing of the pipes. Doors and windows form entrance paths not only for burglars but also harmful animals like snakes and in the winter, cold air that may lead to freezing of the pipes. It is valuable to lock all windows to prevent entrance of anything that may damage your property.  3) Set Lights on the Timer and Set the Alarm

A view of a house that is dark through several nights gives the indication that the occupants are not around. Currently, timers are in the market whereby they can be plugged on some lights and electronics to turn them off and on at the set times. Apart from having the timers on lights, it is advisable to use them on electronics like radios and televisions to create some noise that will indicate the presence of someone in the house. Lookout for the best timers in the market that suit your needs, currently there is those that pair with a Smartphone. Alarms within the home will keep off intruders and give an alert on suspicious activities.

 4) Tell Neighbors You are Leaving

Good neighbors are essential in protecting your home when you are away. Telling them you will be away for a certain period will help them be vigilant and watch out for any suspicious activities around the home. Neighbors or trusted friends also come handy in collecting mail and packages on your behalf to keep them safe. It is not advisable to broadcast your vacation for instance on social media as this informs trespassers and burglars that you are out. All vacation posts can be made after the vacation to avoid worries about the safety of your home.

5) Ensure all Appliances are Turned Off

In cases where one does not have electronic timers as discussed above then it is sensible to unplug all the electronic appliances such as computers, radios, coffee makers, electric kettle and television sets. It is HIGHLY recommended to ensure that the dishwasher, ice makers, and washing machines be turned off to prevent water damage. This encourages saving of power usage and protection from electrical surges that may cause damage to the appliance or fire outbreaks.
